San Diego’s Best Fish Tacos

A few years ago, when a friend of mine moved here from Phoenix she asked where to get the best fish tacos in San Diego.  It got me thinking, and recollecting, about a handful of go-to-fish-taco joints that I hadn’t visited since my 20s.  So I decided to take her for a trip down memory lane to visit my old haunts.  Uhhhh, not so much.  Overcooked, bland, even gross were words that described this culinary experience. So, of course I found myself on a mission to redeem San Diego and find the perfect fish taco and will you believe that I found it in a Food Truck that parks a few blocks from my house?

The former Mariscos Germán, now Nine Seas Seafood, has $1.50 fish tacos that are absolutely, hands down, the best I’ve ever had.  The ample amount of fish, of which there are several choices, but I usually order generic, whatever you give-me style, is always fresh, perfectly fried-crispy, buttery (not greasy), served on a soft (but doesn’t fall apart) corn tortilla and topped with freshly chopped cabbage and onion mixture, and a light Mexican crema that makes your mouth water.  They are perfect.  There are several fresh salsas including a fire it up hot jabanero, a milder tomatilla salsa with cooling cilantro, and the ever popular hot, but not burn your belly chipotle that has a slightly creamy texture and is, for the record, my favorite.

They also give you a cup of fish soup—sort of an appetizer, while you wait kind of thing—it’s good but I typically pass to leave room for the two tacos I always order.  The menu is packed full of fantastic offerings, like oysters on the half-shell, ceviche, grilled fish, octopus, scallops, salmon burgers, and french fries too.

No matter the time of the day (they are open 7 days a week, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.), there is always a line of hungry fans, many of which drive from all over San Diego to enjoy these fish tacos.  The wait is usually from five to twenty minutes, but it is worth it.

You’ll find the truck located in the Gala Foods parking lot on the corner of 30th and Grape streets in the heart of South Park.
